01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Just moments on foot from the north exit of Ikebukuro Station, Tendon Fuji hangs its noren over a compact storefront dedicated purely to tempura rice bowls. The interior is counter seating only, intimate and unfussy. Each piece of tempura is dropped into hot oil only after the ticket is in, and within minutes of taking a seat, an aromatic, freshly assembled bowl is placed directly in front of you.

The signature standard tendon covers the rice with a generous spread of ingredients: prawn, tender whiting, soft squid, leafy shungiku (garland chrysanthemum), nori, and shishito pepper. A seasoned sweet-and-savory tare sauce coats the light batter and seeps into the grains below, while a bright pinch of beni shoga (pickled red ginger) perched on top cuts through the richness. Served with a piping hot bowl of miso soup for just ¥800, it remains a beloved, accessible lunch staple for regulars on the move.

For bigger appetites, the Jumbo Tendon doubles the prawn and whiting portions to 2 pieces each and upsizes the rice, while the Special Tendon crowns the bowl with a whole anago (conger eel). A side of Japanese pickles for ¥100 makes an excellent palate cleanser between bites of warm tempura.

The shop operates continuously from 11:00 to 16:00, and payment is strictly cash only. Seats are limited, so a queue can form during peak meal hours, but the cooking and turnover are brisk. When you need a fast, satisfying bowl of freshly fried tempura right by Ikebukuro Station, Fuji reliably delivers.
